Giardia lamblia

A type of protozoa (found in the intestinal tract and in feces of humans, sheep, cattle, and beaver) that causes foul-smelling, explosive diarrhea called GIARDIASIS. The protozoa was named for the 19th-century French biologist Alfred Giard, who discovered it. It is most often found in tropical areas and in those who travel to the tropics. Recently, it has become more common in the developed countries, where it is especially common in preschools and among people living in institutions.
